Tooth Ache
Carefully clean the area surrounding the painful tooth. Use a warm saltwater rinse to remove any trapped food. Never place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum tissue. If you observe facial swelling, place a cold compress on the external part of the face. Acetaminophen can be taken for short-term relief. Schedule a dental visit as soon as you can.
Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip, or Cheek
Apply ice to any swollen or bruised areas. For active bleeding, gently press a sterile gauze or clean cloth against the wound. If bleeding doesn’t stop after 15 minutes of firm pressure, go to the emergency room without delay.
Broken Tooth
Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to clean the area. Apply a cold compress to the area on the outside of the injury. Save any pieces of the broken tooth. Reach out to a dentist right away.
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth
Grip the tooth by the crown and avoid making contact with the root. Rinse it gently and do not scrub. Try gently reinserting the tooth into its socket and keeping it in place with a clean cloth or gauze. If reinserting isn’t possible, store it in milk or water. Act fast and seek professional help.
Jaw Injury
If you suspect a jaw injury, wrap a towel, tie, or cloth around the head to help keep the jaw closed, and go immediately to an emergency dental care provider for assessment.
Bleeding After a Baby Tooth Falls Out
Take a clean piece of gauze, fold it, and place it over the bleeding area. Have the child bite down firmly for 15 minutes. If bleeding persists, contact a dental professional.
Cold or Canker Sores
Over-the-counter topical treatments can help ease discomfort. If these sores do not go away after a few days, visit your pediatric dentist for proper care.
