About Teeth

Board-Certified Specialists in Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry

Humans develop two complete sets of teeth throughout their lives. The first set, known as primary or baby teeth, typically starts to emerge between 6 and 8 months of age. Typically, by age 3, a child has developed all 20 primary teeth.

Around age 6, these baby teeth start to fall out, making room for permanent or adult teeth. Most of these permanent teeth are in place by the ages of 9 to 11, except for the wisdom teeth. These final molars often erupt between the late teens and early twenties. Adults usually have 32 permanent teeth, although many people don’t have enough space in their mouths for all of them, leading to the common practice of wisdom tooth removal.

Each type of tooth serves a specific purpose. The incisors are the front teeth used for cutting food. Canines, with their pointed shape, help in tearing. Just behind them are the premolars, also called bicuspids, and farther back are the molars, which are designed for grinding. Since permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime, daily brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits are essential for maintaining oral health.
