See An Orthodontist

Orthodontic treatment can enhance the look and function of your teeth and bite, producing a healthier and more confident smile. Bexar Orthodontists & Pediatric Dentists suggest kids and adults visit an orthodontist at some point in their dental development. Below are some general guidelines for when to visit an orthodontist:

Children

The American Association of Orthodontists states that children should get their first orthodontic examination at age 7. The majority of children at this age will have a combination of baby and permanent teeth, allowing the orthodontist to assess the jaw and tooth alignment and spot any issues that need to be fixed. Prompt treatment and assessment can prevent bigger issues from developing and make them quicker and easier to treat as they grow.

Teenagers

Adolescence is an age for standard orthodontic treatment. Most permanent teeth have erupted, and the treatment that may be required is possible before the jaw closes. Orthodontic issues of teenagers include crooked or crowded teeth, overbites or underbites, and jaw alignment problems. The treatment may be braces, clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances.

Adults

Orthodontics is not just for children and teenagers – more and more adults are seeking orthodontic treatment in an effort to improve oral health and facial appearance. But other adults have missed their opportunity to receive orthodontic treatment when they were young or due to aging, injury, or other reasons. Adults who seek treatment from an orthodontist for typical complaints include crowded and crooked teeth, bite problems, and jaw pain or discomfort.

Even if you are not in the usual age range for orthodontic treatment, there are a few indicators that you or your child may need to see an orthodontist in addition to these general recommendations. Among them are:

  • Trouble chewing or biting
  • Breathing through the mouth
  • Speech problems
  • Sucking on the thumb or fingers past the age of 5
  • Grinding or clenching teeth upon closing them
  • Moving or clicking jaws
  • Protruding teeth
  • Front teeth that do not come together when biting
  • Crowded or spaced-apart teeth
  • Difficulty with flossing or brushing teeth

If you or your child is having any of these issues, an orthodontic evaluation as soon as possible is necessary. Early treatment can prevent more complex problems and enhance treatment effectiveness.
